The first 2 Winter Talks have now taken place and they were a great success.
Tuesday, 8 Febraury
The first Winter Talk took place under the capable direction of Chefs Christine Stewart and Rosemary Bowes. Christine first provided a presentation on important considerations for camp cooking while paddling and rowing. Those in attendance then went into small groups to identify good things to take for camp cooking and to prepare a typical day’s menu. Christine and Rosemary visited each group to provide feedback and suggestions.
After this group exercise, the trainee and experienced chefs in attendance fired up their camp stoves. The good smells filled the Hall. Wonderful meals were made and shared.
Tuesday 15 February
The second Winter Talk was more traditional in nature. Hugh Kerr recounted highlights of his 62 years of Membership in the Royal West.
The first part of his talk covered his rowing experiences at the Club. These included racing to a very high standard and long rows. Especially, interesting were explanations of his early racing experience when the Royal West was a force in sliding seat rowing. Later in life Hugh returned to rowing in a more active way and his more recent rowing exploits were covered.
The second part of his talk was a history of the kayaking expeditions that Hugh has been on. His love of kayaking and wild places in Scotland came through loud and clear.
The talk was superbly illuminated with beautiful photos and video.
