MS and Diabetes UK Fundraiser last weekend

The club hosted a musical fundraiser for MS and Diabetes UK again on the 22nd August. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the night with a diverse range of music and madness. The theme of the evening seemed to be wigs, with Hamish Rae kicking things off wearing a blond wig as a nod to Rick Parfitt for his Status Quo medley. The wig theme was continued when Stuart Anderson played wearing a long black wig, along with the keyboard player doing a set of songs from the 60’s.

Of course there was music from most of the regulars who attend the monthly Boat Club Sessions and Royal West members performing included our VP Al Black, Gavin Stewart and Social Convener George Carson. The “house band” put together by Stuart Anderson showed their talent in backing some of the musicians and doing their own sets of songs. We had a lovely rendition of the Everly Brothers’ classic Dream from three of the girls, who also lead the dancing to many of the songs. The music night ended with a rendition of Dougie Maclean’s Caledonia sung by all the musicians and singers who had taken part, ably accompanied by the whole audience who were on their feet, singing and swaying along, arms around each other.

A tasty buffet was supplied by Shelagh Holt, Lynn Morrison and Cheryl Carson. Entry was free but everyone contributed to the raffle and put in donations for the buffet. Over £300 was raised to be split between MS and Diabetes UK. Some of the performers have MS and the young son of one of the couples involved has diabetes, so this event is a very personal night but full of fun, music and dancing. We plan to hold another fundraiser early in 2015.

The next Boat Club Session is Friday the 29th August and we hope to see many of our friends from the fundraiser there.
