Phil Jones, Canoeing Convener is planning to organise a course to provide instruction on how to use a VHF Marine Radio. At the end of the course you should receive the RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate. The Royal Yachting association (RYA) says the following about this award.
A course and exam for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment.
You do not need your own personal VHF Radio to take this course.
This course should be of interest to those who kayak, row or sail.
The date for this course is still to be set but it will take place in October 2022. It is expected to be 1 day in duration on a Saturday or Sunday. The course syllabus requires 10 hours of instruction and an exam. It is expected that the course will cost participants around £110. We will ask for a non-refundable deposit of £50 from participants to secure a place on the course.
We wish to judge the interest in this course before making further arrangements. If you would be interested in taking this course then please send an email to –

Please be sure to include your name in your response.
If we have enough interest then we will email those interested with the proposed date and ask you to sign up and pay the deposit to secure a place on the course. You are under no obligation to take a place on the course if you express an interest.
Sincerely,
